Highland Broadband: Our Story Core

Check availability and register interest

Over the last couple of months, you’ll have seen our friendly engineering teams working hard to build our ultrafast network in the streets of Alness. You also might have spotted our community liaison officer Claudette out and about visiting local groups and businesses – she was even at the Christmas street fayre the other week, taking the time to chat to many of you and answer all your questions.

But we know some of you might be wondering, “who are Highland Broadband?”

Our story

Back in 2015, a small group of individuals came together with the aim of bringing reliable and cost-effective broadband to their semi-rural communities. As residents themselves of these areas, they knew better than most how limiting a slow and unreliable internet connection could be. And so Lothian Broadband was born.

Originally, Lothian Broadband provided Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) connections (since this was all that was available at the time!) but over time, and with the support of government initiatives, we were able to build our own ultrafast, fibre broadband network to deliver speeds that have never been seen before in these areas.

Our move into the Highlands

During this time, the company acquired Highland Wireless, heralding the start of the move into the Highland region. So it was only natural that we’d choose the Highlands as the next area to expand our fibre network into, launching Highland Broadband.

Collectively, we’re now known as LBN (Lothian Broadband Networks). And while many things have changed since we first started, one thing has never changed; our mission to bridge the digital divide and give semi-rural and rural communities access to reliable, cost-effective and fast broadband.

You shouldn’t have to choose between high-quality connectivity or living in the location that you want. Our ultrafast broadband network gives entire families the freedom to work and play at home, regardless of where home is.

What makes us different?

Community has always been at the heart of what we do, and always will be. Everyone in a community deserves access to great connectivity – so when we commit to building our network in your area, we try to connect all the homes in that community, not just the easy ones!

We also know how much of an impact there is on the local area and small businesses when ground works are being completed – that’s why we work as fast as we can and aim to get the first customers connected within just 2 months of starting our build. It’s not the cheapest way to do things, but we use commercial investment and Government subsidy so you’ll never see these costs as a customer – the important thing to us is that we minimise disruption as best we can. (And if you’ve ever wondered what happens when we start building our fibre network, you can read all about it here)

So, while Highland Broadband might be new to your area, our teams are experienced in bringing the very best ultrafast fibre broadband right to your door, and we can’t wait to welcome you on board.
