Meet the team

Ben Ewing, Network Technician

Ben is responsible for the configuration, monitoring and on-going maintenance of the core network and customer equipment. As part of this role he is also tasked with providing customer support. Prior to joining Lothian Broadband in September 2015 he spent two years at Edinburgh College obtaining an HND in Interactive Media and Web Design.

Ian Smith - Director

Ian oversees all aspects of Lothian Broadband Network's day to day activities. His remit runs from planning future projects to commercial activities and opportunities. He also addresses the technical feasibility of new initiatives and guides the company's overall strategic development. Ian's first degree is an Honours in Physics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. With many years experience in the technical, scientific and management fields, his return to rural Scotland and the prospect of no fast broadband motivated the founding of a community wireless broadband service. This culminated in the launch of Lothian Broadband Networks Ltd in 2015.

Angus Harper, Operations Manager

Gus manages the construction of the physical Lothian Broadband network and supporting infrastructure, delivering high speed wireless internet to customers all over the Lothians. He also oversees the customer installation process. With Lothian Broadband since 2015, Gus brings a wealth of experience to the job.

Liz MacIntosh, Office Manager

Liz has been involved with the company since its community origins in 2005. Today she maintains the smooth running of all aspects of back office activities from Lothian Broadband’s Humbie headquarters. This ranges from basic administration and payroll tasks to Human Resources management. Liz attended Dundee College of Commerce and then obtained a degree in Business Management from Napier University. Beyond her career she is active in the voluntary sector.

David Walls - Director

David addresses strategy at a policy level with politicians, national decision-makers, other organisations and companies, especially where this impacts on company operations. His role extends to public relations and lobbying of key stakeholders at both a local and national level. Alongside Ian, David co-founded the original community based wireless broadband service in 2005 and comes with many years experience in ICT and software consultancy.

Jamie Kelman, Field Technician & Operations Assistant

Jamie works with the Operations Manager in the development and construction of the physical wireless broadband network and back-end infrastructure. This includes the customer installation process. Originally from Forfar, he graduated with an Honours in Law from Aberdeen University. After a varied career running his own businesses, he now lives near Gifford with his family.

Norrie McKinley, Network Architect Manager

Norrie is responsible for the architecture, overall configuration and the smooth running of the entire Lothian Broadband network. Norrie holds a BSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Napier. He has many years commercial experience in research, development and design in the medical electronics as well as the corporate IT sector. Along with Ian Smith and David Walls, Norrie has been with the company since 2005.

Nicholas McCormick, Managing Director

Nic is in charge of both the sales and marketing functions at Lothian Broadband Networks with the objective of driving current and future projects. The role includes oversight of customer services. Originally from New Zealand, Nic has a diverse skillset, including projects in construction and civil engineering. He has a BEng Honours in Civil Engineering and was involved in the development of some of the UK’s first community broadband solutions.



Patrick Flockhart, Chairman

Patrick is a veteran of international, internet, corporate and start-up businesses. Today he assists enterprises he passionately believes in, providing both investment backing and a wealth of experience gained during his career. He believes in the power of teams to make businesses succeed and works hard to ensure they do. Originally from Aberdeen where he graduated from Robert Gordon University, he has lived and worked in the UK, France, China, Taiwan and the USA. In ‘98 he gained an MBA from Cranfield University.

Abbie Cassidy, Marketing Manager

Abbie is responsible for Lothian Broadband's Marketing and Communications in line with the company's strategic goals. With a background in Arts Marketing, Abbie relishes the opportunity to build this exciting, new brand in our rural community.
